About Manual Wheelchair
from: Maxx Seniors LifeWheelchairs are devices that help peole who have become immobile, having difficulties in walking due to an injury or illness. These devices are simply chairs with wheels that are propelled manually using the hands or automatically using some type of electrical system.
Manual wheelchairs are the most common and require human control to propel them. There are three types of manual wheelchair -- self-propelled, attendant-propelled wheelchair and the wheelbase.
Self-propelled types have large rear wheels that measure 20 to 26 inches in diameter and have a strong resemblance to bicycle wheels. Users can move their manual wheelchair by pushing the hand rims, which is a round steel tube located on the side of the wheels. Experts can easily control their speed and turning and can also do a "wheelie" by balancing the rear wheels.
A single-arm drive allows a user to turn in different directions and the two-armed drive allows the user to move forward or backward in a straight line. The lever-drive wheelchair is another common type of manual wheelchair that allows the user to move forward by pumping the lever back and forth.
Several types of manual wheelchairs are designed for medical purposes and others are specifically made for participating in sports, such as wheel chair basketball. The design allows the user to move forward even while they're dribbling the ball.
Attendant-propelled manual wheelchair are designed to be pushed by an attendant using the handles located at the back. This type's back wheels are often rimless and usually smaller than self-propelled manual wheelchairs and are most often used for moving patients to a various areas at hospitals and airports. There are also specialized wheelchairs used by airlines designed to fit the airplane's aisles and seats.
Wheelbase chairs are platforms with wheels and specially-made seating systems for patients with complex postures. They'r manufactured by taking a cast of a patient's best seating position and then molding the shape from the foam. The seat is then framed and attached to the wheelbase.
As you can see, there is a wide variety of manual wheelchairs available at various price points. Lightweight wheelchairs cost the most when compared to entry-level, tubular chairs. This type is most often used by people with long-term disabilities. The most expensive types are the ultra-light chairs with fabricated seats plus additional accessories and special features.
