Caring For Your Loved One with Home Senior Services

from: Pat Moauro

Home Senior Services Helps Retirees Deal with Challenges Brought by Aging

As the population in the United States ages, more families will be faced with the need to care for a loved one in their home. Some seniors may have health issues, and others may simply be retired and need help with transportation or meals. Fortunately, the field of home senior services is booming, so relatives have more options available to help a senior take care of him or herself at home.

Transportation

As one ages, one of the biggest issues is the loss of mobility. One may not have a debilitating illness or injury, but a diminishing capacity to see or hear can influence whether someone continues to drive. If you live in a city, you might be blessed with a wonderful bus or train system. If so, the senior can still move around and go shopping or run errands without much help or intervention. However, if you want to provide additional support with home senior services, there are companies offering senior shuttles to ferry the elderly to and from particular destinations. Times, flexibility, and schedules may vary but it's worth looking into.

Meals

Many elderly people who no longer have someone else to cook for often fail to care for their own meals properly. Or, if they have difficulty with conditions such as arthritis, they may not feel up to exerting themselves enough to cook. Organizations are available to offer home senior services and provide meals. Meals can be sent to an elderly relative if it becomes apparent he/she isn't properly feeding him/herself.

Companionship

Seniors need more than just having their bodily needs taken care of. Many seniors are isolated and need relationship and social interaction in the form of regular visits or even owning a pet. If they are living alone, often they may not have regular companionship. Someone can be hired to come in and spend time with the elderly person or trade living space for an in-home caregiver as part of the variety of available home senior services from which to choose.

Medical or Non-Medical Home Senior Services

If a senior needs minimal medical intervention to remain at home, a home health care aide is a good option. The aide can come in and help with errands, housekeeping, hygiene, and monitor vital signs. The aide also provides some companionship for the senior client. If the patient needs more medical skills, one can be trained in administering these services if they are not too complex and don't require round-the-clock supervision. Home senior services may not be able to treat the senior if the condition is more severe and requires other treatment.

The senior may need to be moved to a nursing home or an assisted living community, but that has to be decided on an individual basis. However, in many cases seniors can continue to live at home and enjoy themselves with a little help from home senior services.
