Deciding On Transportation Senior Services
from: Pat MoauroSeniors Who Lose Their Right to Drive Can Rely on Transportation Senior Services
Seniors who lose their driving privileges can feel they've also lost a degree of independence and self-esteem. This can be particularly the case if the took their right to drive for granted. Sometimes chronic illnesses such as arthritis or Alzheimer's disease can interfere with proper motor skills and judgment. Or, eyesight may weaken to the point where being on the road may be dangerous but not enough to keep someone housebound.
They can still enjoy a fruitful social life if they can take care of their need for transportation. Many elderly individuals continue to need transportation to doctor's appointments and caregivers to maintain health. If they're unable to prepare their own meals, they may need transportation to a meals program. If an elderly person should fall suddenly ill or become incapacitated in the future, transportation needs to be planned before such emergencies happen.
Seniors need a wide support network for their transportation senior services needs, which should include:
* Family
* Friends and Neighbors
* Local Agencies
* Home Care Services
* Emergency Personnel
Family
Many families with an elderly family member, who needs transportation senior services, will normally rotate appointments schedules among siblings. This works well if multiple siblings with flexible schedules are available to insure that a senior keeps their appointments or can be taken on recreational outings occasionally. However, most of the time this isn't the case with today's families in which both parents work. In a case such as this, one might turn to neighbors to help with some of the transportation needs.
Friends and Neighbors
Many seniors can rely on friends and neighbors to help them get to medical appointments, but some don't want to be a burden if they simply want to go on an outing about town. Fortunately, there are a variety of ways to get around town even if you no longer drive a vehicle.
Local Agencies
Seniors can use local bus routes to get around town to some business areas for recreational purposes. Some seniors want to take classes and workshops, so the buses offer a convenient way to get there without the need to bother family or friends. Buses are typically inexpensive but are subject to weather conditions and scheduled stops.
Subway stations are available in major cities and can be helpful for providing quick and inexpensive transportation services to seniors who want to get about town. Unfortunately, not all cities have subway or elevated systems available to their residents.
Home Care Services
Some home care services provide door-to-door transportation senior services for a fee. Some have scheduled routes, pick-up and drop-off spots and times. Others can be called on demand. Services vary widely and can be found by searching the Internet or looking in the phone book.
Emergency Transportation Senior Services
For emergencies, obviously one should always be willing to call an ambulance, a taxi, or any other city service to help transport an elderly person in crisis. Insurance information and programs should be carefully researched to determine the option available during particular scenarios. This will help to ensure that the proper actions are taken during an emergency.
