A Senior's Community Offers Many Different Options for Residents

from: Pat Moauro

A senior's community refers primarily to retirement communities where seniors live among other seniors with dignity and, in most cases, while maintaining their independence. Although there are many different types of seniors' communities, they can be divided into two broad headings:

* Residential, and

* Non-residential

A residential senior's community can be further sub-divided into categories depending on the living arrangements. These are:

* Assisted living communities

This type of seniors' community is for the elderly who need help with daily activities because of ill health. In an assisted living senior's community, a resident can interact with other residents if his or her condition allows. They eat meals together. Recreational activities are normally a group event. Residents still maintain their independence in most things; they're also able to access help when it's needed.

* Independent living

This type of senior's community is similar to the assisted living facility except that residents are able to live independently without any assistance beyond the normal needs. An independent living senior's community can be apartments or a series of flats. Retirees like to move into these kinds of senior's communities because this type of housing is generally cheaper and easier to maintain.

* Nursing homes

This kind of senior's community is used by those who need long term care. Residents of nursing homes generally need constant care and supervision.

The non-residential senior's community refers to facilities used by seniors, who don't live on site. Such senior's communities include:

* Day care centers for the elderly

* Resource centers for the elderly

A non-residential senior's community offers opportunities for interaction between people of a similar age group. Users have access to activities that help to keep their minds alert and their bodies fit. Many of these communities have libraries and computer labs for use by seniors.

Today's senior's community is considerably different from those of two or three years ago. Previously they were generally unpleasant places where old people went to die. Thankfully, today this is no longer the case. The senior's community is more often than not, the place they call home. The only difference is that your neighbors all tend to be of a certain age.

A senior's community can be similar to a five-star hotel, and if you have the financial means you can find many such communities. Many upscale establishments have professional chefs, rooms that can rival those in the best hotels, and qualified staff.

Another senior's community may have a swimming pool for residents or make arrangements for weekly swimming trips. Others offer classes in such hobbies and activities as mosaic, pottery and book repairs.

A senior citizen looking for a senior's community to join has many options from which to choose.
